Benefits

. . . or why we think you should run an offTimetable event !

Teachers are increasingly being encouraged to take ownership of the curriculum and be creative and innovative in how they teach. Suspending the timetable for a week (or just a few days) can really allow you to do this.

The change of pace and the opportuntity to expand and explore new themes with the children is not only exciting but also has long lasting effects on the way the children learn when they return to the normal curriculum.

You can give your pupils a chance to make connections with the real world, and give them time to immerse themselves in areas of new discovery.

The children themselves feel empowered and motivated.

Your Staff Team Will Love It

Offtimetable events present a superb opportunity to do something really exciting and different.

And they can be really easy to plan. In fact, far easier than normal lesson planning.

I’ve finished planning my activity for Arts Week ! We’ll be using ‘Photo Story 3′. The children will bring their own treasures into school and we will draw or photograph them. Then the fun starts. We will scan the drawings and photographs into the computer and make a video of them. And then the children will add their own thoughts and words to the video. Can’t wait to start this.

And when does the normal timetable present an opportunity for colleagues to truly specialise or show off hidden talents ?

And if you allow your pupils to select their own activities, your staff get to teach excited and self-motivated pupils !

Your staff team will love an offtimetable event.

Your Head Will Love It

There are a myriad of educational motivations for running an offTimetable event. And you will need to highlight these to your head and your colleagues when you promote your ideas. But perhaps the key benefits to your head teacher are:

  • Anticipation of a forthcoming event generates a cross-school ‘buzz’ – a focus that remotivates and re-energises staff and pupils alike.
  • A chance to unite the school on a shared objective
  • An opportunity to really show-off what the school can acheive (planning a ‘post-event exhibition’ can be extremely beneficial). It is usually possible to generate interest and exposure with local newspapers and TV/radio.

Your Pupils Will Love It

. . . of course they will !

Offering a range of activities ensures that everyone will find something that they enjoy. The children get to learn in new spaces, with new teachers and they form new friendships. An off-timetable event can be the highlight of the school year.

At our school, most children cited our ‘Art Week’ as the best week of the year on their end of year reports. We conducted an end of event evaluation and over 80% of the children stated that making new friends was one of the important features of the week.
